If there’s been a zombie apocalypse and you’re road-tripping alone though the wasteland, you could do worse than run into Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), a bourbon-swilling bad-boy butt-kicker with a really cool car. This is where the careful hero of Zombieland, a kid nicknamed Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), finds himself early in the film, an… More >>

I only have two things to say about this fantastic film:

Rule #1 Avoid reading anything about it, just buy it and watch it.

Rule #2 Can Amazon please, please, PLEASE delete the review which casually mentions who the cameo is by? It is a truly wonderful part of the film and a very funny reveal. It is an absolute shame that potential buyers could have this moment ruined just by glancing down this page. No one wants to know what ‘Rosebud’ is, who is really Luke’s father or what pops up halfway through the Crying Game… and no one should know who the cameo is in Zombieland before they see it.

Not really fair to compare to ‘Shaun Of The Dead’ as there are running zombies and this has a budget that would have made Simon Pegg have genuine nightmares for many months. Even though it has cut price Michael Cera and Mila Kunis actors in the lead roles.

So… Rule #3: Enjoy the hell out of this film.

Basic story is of our `teen’ hero Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) relating how he has survived the `Living Dead’ apocalypse that has befallen the USA in his very own list of survival rules. During this time, he befriends `super-zombie killer’ Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) who seems intent on searching America for the last surviving `Twinkie’ before expiration date, whilst trying to annililate the undead hoards in his way. Eventually the two begin travelling with two sisters (Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin) who – like Tallahassee with his twinkies – seem just as intent on doing something stupid by travelling to a Funfair to ride the rides.

As you can see fron the basic story of this movie, it is not a serious movie and anyone buying thinking such is going to be in for a real disapointment. To anyone who has yet to see this movie, I would have to describe it as Wonder Years meets Shaun Of The Dead at the Fairground or House of the dead Funfair in Overkill ! I thought the introdution of Bill Murray as Bill Murray was cool, but could have been so much more than it was – it just felt like Bill decided to do ten minutes for a few bucks and then get the hell out – though I have to admit his death was a suprise as I thought he was going to say he was wearing a bullet proof vest !

My own personal favourite sceen of the movie has to be Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) riding the fair-ground roller coaster whilst simultaneously annihilating the living dead already on the ride – Could have made this sceen far longer and it would still have been enjoyable !

Let downs for me ? Well, the 90 minutes or so went too fast and left me wanting to see a little bit more – especially of Tallahassee, who I think would make a great action figure ! The movie also features a hell of a lot of sceens of the demise of civilisation during the opening credits and it makes me wonder as to why they did not give the movie a little more depth into the downfall of the world. Many times – especially at the end – it just felt like either there was a sequel coming, or that it was the pilot for a TV series with alot of potential – thoguh I am sure FOX/CBS would have made it into a Buffyesque melodrama. Lastly, the zombies are the remake `Dawn Of The Living Dead’ running type as opposed to the Romero `plodders’, and I think the plodders would have made a more fun film giving Tallahassee more scope for planning more thoughful zombie demise. More Piano’s please !

I have also never been a real big fan of Woody (no sexual pun intended), but for ME this has to be my favourite Harrelson movie to date. OK it is not a piece of acting that is ever going to get him an oscar but never-the-less I thoroughly enjoyed his role and he looked to me like he got just as much fun making the movie !

Anyhow, I think the movie promised a lot, delivered some entertainment for 1 ½ hours and left the audience wanting more – but saying that, it could also have been alot better. So, 4 out of 5 (actually want to give 3.5 – but can’t).

Having no expectations really makes a difference on your enjoyment levels with films like these, it’s a no brainer, no deep story and pretty much no cast apart from the four leads, but it does not feel empty for it.

What a funny film, it’s kinda like when the Americans did their version of `The Office’, but in this case I dare say it actually betters our version – our version being Shawn of the Dead. Bold statement I know, bound to upset some people but I stand by it for reasons fourfold: No1, it looks good, the scenes are well filmed with cool music and are really enjoyable. No2, bigger and broader in the set-pieces, better action, bigger explosions. No3, I actually prefer the leads in this one which I find odd myself considering the actors in Shawn, and even the cameos were good, which just leads me to No4, the cameo. Fan-dabby-dosey. That’s all I need to say about that.

Woody Harrelson where have you been? Not since the days of White Men Cant Jump has he been a front man with so much presence, funny to see him as the square jawed zombie killing `ard nut considering he was the softly spoken, nice-but-dim guy out of Cheers, and infact the Woody of that period could’ve quite easily played the softly spoken young un `Connecticut’ in Z-land, funny how things change.

The females in this play their parts well too and the four of them together make for an interesting little family in the scenes they are gabbling in…

As far as the story goes, it basically follows the four leads trying to get from one side of the US to the other, surviving as they go. That’s it really, I mean there are a few sidelines, but the essence just plonks the characters in situations where they kill an odd zombie here, or avoid the odd swarm of zombies there, and deliver a well placed wisecrack…after a well placed truck door/shot gun blast/novelty wooden mallet etc. Just don’t get too bogged down with the depth of the story and simply enjoy it, which I have no doubt you will!

Here’s a little wager…I bet when you watch this you’ll be dusting your old Kingpin DVD off and putting straight in afterwards…

In a post apocalyptic America which is ruled by cannibalistic consumer zombies ,four totally apposite yet extremely intriguing characters come together as they still retain their human emotional flaws and strengths.

Zoombieland is a tribute to the creative interaction of Woody harrelson -Jesse Eissenberg and Bill Murray ,set in a metaphorical post apocalyptic America ,where other people are robotic zombies and cannot even enjoy simple pleasures of life like a twinkie,WOODY AS a gun toting Texan as Tallahasssee ,who gets his kicks by eliminating zombies with anything from an AK-47 to running them over with an sv40, steals this delightful comic satire ,Jesse is a boy nerd with 30 radical set of militant rules, he has invented to survive like ,almost like an army drill and they are as macabre as humorous .

THE MALE DUO are met by two sisters[STONE -BRESLIN ] who are searching for a dream theme park in HOLLYWOOD ,but initially the men get hoodwinked by their female cunning in a delightful battle of sexes and this becomes a balanced human equation .

Finally a truce is established and they travel in a road journey ,as a foursome team across a wasteland that is filled with consumer icons like Walmarts and ethnic gift shops with no one to consume anything ,this is both provoking and entertaining and still imbued with social satire and deeper meaning beyond mere existentialism which makes it rather interesting, and the trashing of a native american indian gift shop filled with cheap asian imports, is truly comic .

Reaching California they run into a real celebrity survivor ,BILL MURRAY-who is stupendously intelligent in his portrayal,he takes the hollywood horror zombie genre to task in an acutely wry portrayal.

The movie is a delight like the twinkie that Woody is searching for in his travels from mid-west to hollywood, but he is persistently disappointed ,finally he achieves his wish but in doing so the 4 protagonists also inspire a hope for humanity in creating a social and healing pattern for the contemporary “fractured family system” .

The pace is a little uneven and at times you want it to a bit more than it is ,but it is a rather pleasant surprise of a black comedy .
